Welcome Trinidad

About the Community

Trinidad is a small vibrant town located in southern Colorado 19 miles from the New Mexico border and ~130 miles from Colorado Springs. The town is bisected by I-25, a major highway that connects Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo and Raton (NM). Often called the "Carribean of The Rockies" the town enjoys a fairly mild climate with over 250 days of sunshine. The town, elevation 6,025 ft, is surrounded by the short grass prairie plains to the east and the Spanish Peaks to the north. The town's iconic feature, Fishers Peak (9,630 ft), towers over the city and the sparking blue waters of Trinidad Lake feed the Purgatoire River that winds through the center of town. Trinidad has two beautiful state parks- Trinidad Lake State Park and the brand-new Fishers Peak State Park.  Visitors to the town can stroll down the brick lined streets and enjoy restaurants, museums, art galleries, a Trinidad Triggers baseball game, a movie at the local cinema, theatre, food court, municipal golf course, bowling alley, skate park, riverwalk and much more. Although the town has a small population of 8,320 (in 2020), it still provides many amenities including Trinidad State Junior College, Carnegie Library, Mt San Rafeal Hospital, Mount Carmel Wellness Center, Sister Blandina's Garden, a municipal golf course, several hotels (including the new Hilton) and a Walmart. The Trinidad Welcome Center provides information to visitors and operates a free Trinidad Trolly in the summer. Trinidad offers a vast array of outdoor fun including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, tubing, photography, and music festivals.

Trinidad has had a colorful past from its early days where Billy the Kid and Bat Masterson frequented the old saloons, to years of coal and natural gas mining. Now the community benefits from a blend of tourism, mining and ranching.
