The value of microchipping your pet

It may be hard to believe that something the size of a grain of rice could save your pet's life, but it can! HomeAgain, one of several microchip companies, just reunited their one millionth lost pet with its owner. Each month they average over 10, 000 recoveries! Microchiping your pet is one of the most effective and proactive measures that you can take to ensure your beloved family member is returned to you if he gets lost or stolen. If your pet gets lost and looses his collar (or a thief takes his collar off), a microchip will enable veterinarians, animal control officers and shelters to identify as your pet and return him to you.

Microchips are small devices, about the size of a grain of rice, that are placed just under your pet's skin. The cost if a microchip is around $20 and does not cause your pet any discomfort. The procedure only take a few minutes and can be done right at both vet clinics in town and at Noahs Ark. The small chip is injected with a needle, usually into your pets scruff. You are then provided with your pets id number, a tag and registration information. You will need to register your pet with the company that provided the microchip. This step is essential, otherwise your pet's microchip with not be linked specifically to you. The microchip does not work like a tracking device, so you can not locate your pet like a car LoJack system. Your pet needs to be brought to a veterinarian, shelter or animal control officer so that they can use a microchip reader. Contact Fishers Peak Veterinary Clinic (719-846-3211), Trinidad Animal Hospital (719-846-3212) or Noah's Ark ((719) 680-2385) for prices and more information.

Take one of the most important steps towards your pets safety and talk to your veterinarian about microchips today!
